Osada-ryu takatekote (高手小手) with one-leg-up suspension

An in-depth tutorial showing the Osada-ryu 2-TK (2-rope takatekote) with the latest modifications for safety and versatility

Osada-ryu takatekote (高手小手)

The takatekote, often abbreviated to TK, is the core tie of shibari. It is probably the first more sophisticated tie everyone learns and is taught at every rope class, beyond the most basic. Osada Steve was largely responsible for popularising the Akechi-derived TK in the west as his was the first to be taught widely. This tutorial will show you the very latest version in its evolution.

Evolution of the tie: An enhanced version

Since Akechi Denki devised this tie, it has been tweaked by many prominent nawashi, originally by Kanna and, more recently Steve, Kinoko and others. In the interests of safety, it continues to evolve and this tutorial updates the earlier versions of the two-rope version to incorporate the latest modifications.

Looking right isn't enough

As I have often observed, this tie "not only needs to look like a plane, it needs to fly like one". Steve puts it more plainly "There is a science to constructing a safe and sound gote/takatekote. If you do NOT know the science, you are likely to injure someone.". Unfortunately, instruction can often be lacking in depth or it has been learned from a free online video of dubious provenance. The result can all too often be something that looks like a TK but lacks the right engineering or positioning to be safe. These factors are important, but become vital when a load is applied, such as in any form of suspension, to minimise teh risk of nerve injury.

It ain't what you do...

As the song goes. "It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it", and this is something I can't say enough when it comes to kinbaku. In this tutorial, Steve reveals insights such as how to gauge the tightness of the TK on any given day, ways to exert more dominance or be more connective.

Partial suspension

As this tie is often the basis for a suspension, a demonstration of a partial suspension is included. It not only provides some important tips relating to this and suspension in general, explains how to correctly connect your suspension rope and gives another close-up look at tying the TK in normal, rather than tutorial, style.

Hands in front TK

You will also learn the reversed version with hands in front, which not only eases practice and play by making long sessions less taxing but also makes the tie accessible to those with limited flexibility. Of course, it also opens up a range of new suspension possibilities.
